Comic-Con 2010

A wrap up of this year's Comic-Con with trailers, videos, and photos.

THURSDAY

Head to hall h line hoping to get in for the Tron panel. Don't get in. Arrgh! Finally get in and see the panel for Salt. Seems decent. Then it's Battle: Los Angeles. Looks like a really cool shooter game. Then it's the Warren Ellis adaptation Red. They show a really cool trailer. Old people kicking ass. Helen 'The Queen' Mirren, Mary Louise-Parker, and Karl Urban. Then out comes surprise guest Bruce Willis! Crowd goes wild.

Then the EW panel with Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams. Awesome to hear two of my favorite filmmakers discuss their work. The Expendables panel is up next. Harry Knowles from Ain't It Cool News is the moderator. Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Randy Couture, and Terry Crews come out. Clips look badass. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World panel starts with self-moderator Edgar Wright. He then introduces everyone who all get an intro video with clips from the film! Creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ellen Wong, Alison Pill, Mark Webber, Kieran Culkin, Satya Bhabha, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Mae Whitman, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, and Michael Cera comes out last dressed as Captain America. Wright is great and I wish he moderated every panel. At one point he introduced Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, they come out, he remembers they're not in the movie, and they walk back out with their heads down! So funny.

FRIDAY

First panel I check out is James Gunn's Super. Gunn is joined by Rainn Wilson, Liv Tyler, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and producers Ted Hope and Miranda Bailey. The clips look great. Hilarious but also dark and a bit sad. Next is Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Producer/co-writer Guillermo del Toro and director Troy Nixey start with a trailer that ends with a hell of a scare. Then show a scene of a man pulling teeth from his maid that makes everyone squirm.
The Sony panel begins with Priest. The 3D trailer looks great. Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Maggie Q., Cam Gigandet, Stephen Moyer, and director Scott Stewart go onstage. Stewart talks about the animated prologue and his love of 2D animation, then brings out animator Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Lab, Samurai Jack)! He talks about making of it then shows the really cool opening which is nearly complete. Then it's The Other Guys. Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, and Adam McKay come out. Really funny panel. They also showed the trailer for an indie they produced called The Virginity Hit. The Green Hornet panel is next. Seth Rogen, director Michel Gondry, writer Evan Goldberg, producer Neal Moritz, and Christoph Waltz take the stage. 3D Kato vision fight scenes look so cool. Then go see Totally Rad Show live. Boom! It's great and they give out free dvds of The Lost Room. Head to ballroom 20 to watch Batman: Under the Red Hood. It's awesome. John Dimaggio made a great Joker.

SATURDAY

Get up early to make sure I make the Warner Bros. panel. They give out swag bags as we enter. Harry Potter shirt, Sucker Punch bracelet, and Green Lantern comic. Green Lantern is first. The teaser doesn't show any footage of the suit but it's still awesome. Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, and Mark Strong come out. The best moment is when Reynolds recites the oath for a young fan who has a great reaction.
Next is Sucker Punch. Director Zack Snyder, Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Carla Gugino, Jena Malone, and Jamie Chung take the stage. He intros the trailer and it looks insane. Robots, samurais, dragons, all set to Led Zeppelin's When The Levee Breaks. I cannot wait to see it.
Then, Tom Felton comes out an introduces an extended trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It looks brutal. Then it's Let Me In. Being a huge fan of the original I was skeptical about this remake, but the footage they showed won me over completely. It maintains the disturbing tone of the original while creating something that could stand on its own. Plus Richard Jenkins looks great in it. Then it's Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D. They show the trailer and a scene in 3D which looks pretty good.
In the audience somebody gets stabbed in the eye with a pen. Really. Next is Universal's comedy Paul (pictured at the top). The movie looks hilarious and is clearly a love letter to fanboys. Director Greg Mottola, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Bill Hader, Jeffrey Tambor, Joe Lo Truglio, Seth Rogen, and Sigourney Weaver come on stage. Now it's Cowboys & Aliens! Director Jon Favreau comes out and thanks everybody for making Iron Man 2 a hit. He brings out the cast. Then he introduces in his first comic-con appearance none other than...Harrison Ford! He comes out escorted by security in handcuffs, referencing to the incident that delayed the panel. They show a full scene that looks incredible. Seems like a regular old gritty western until the alien ships shows up and starts blasting. Two of my favorite genres have been combined to create something really exciting. Favreau said he wanted to shoot in the style of a serious western like Unforgiven and he nailed it. Marvel panel starts with a Captain America teaser. Despite starting shooting only last week they cut a scene together from dailies to show! It's a great scene with Hugo Weaving as Red Skull. Thor is next. 3D trailer looks pretty cool. Kevin Feige tells everyone he has something else to show. Lights go down and another video starts to play. It’s Sam Jackson’s voice narrating over a slowly illuminating symbol. He’s saying there will come a day when Earth’s mightiest heroes will be needed. On that day, we will meet...The Avengers. Samuel L. Jackson is introduced and takes the stage! He introduces right hand man, Agent Coulson (aka Clark Gregg). “My right hand woman…You know her as Black Widow...Scarlet Johansson! The God of Thunder Chris Hemsworth! The first Avenger, Captain America...Chris Evans!” Then “You know him as Tony Stark...Robert Downey Jr.!” and the place goes nuts. Then Downey announced the official casting of both Hawkeye and Hulk. Jeremy Renner, playing Hawkeye, and Mark Ruffalo, playing Bruce Banner, took the stage along with director Joss Whedon. Crowd goes insane! A highlight of the con.
Next is the famous Kevin Smith Q&A. He kills as usual. Someone proposes to his girlfriend and gets engaged! Awww. Balances out the whole stabbing thing. Head back to the hotel and watch fireworks over the marina.

SUNDAY

Ballroom 20 line is too big so I just stay on the exhibit floor today. Redeem my tickets at fulfillment room. Awesome Captain America t-shirt. Buy some stuff, grab some giveaways. Another great con.
