Here are my picks on all things noteworthy.
Best Screenwriter: Jenny Lumet for Rachel Getting Married - The script is fresh and original. The characters have authentic voices and the way it portrays the familial bond between sisters is splendid. Plus it gets big points for hipster-ish wedding scenes.
Best Movie: Slumdog Millionaire - If I had to recommend one movie it would be this one. Everything about it is full of charm and good storytelling. If you haven't seen it yet, hurry up and go.
Best Year: Taraji P. Henson and Kate Winslet - It seems like Taraji came out of nowhere and now she's all over the place. She's in Tyler Perry movies, Brad Pitt movies and TV shows with William Shatner. Umm, whoa. Next up she'll be starring in a love story with Morris Chesnut. Oh yeah, it's definitely been a good year for her. Then there's Kate Winslet, actress extraordinaire. She has two solid films in her arsenal, will this be the year that Kate finally gets that Oscar win?
Best Newcomer: Freida Pinto - Something tells me that Pinto's short but pleasant performance in Slumdog Millionaire has some Hollywood execs sending scripts her way.
Best Director: Christopher Nolan for The Dark Knight - What Nolan did with this film is brilliant. It's the epitome of a summer blockbuster.
Breakout Performance: Dev Patel in Slumdog Millionaire - Patel was the anchor in this amazing little film about one boy's journey for love. I can't wait to see him a movie with his British accent.
Best Onscreen Chemistry: Will Smith and Rosario Dawson in Seven Pounds - It's about time Rosario did a love story, I just wish there was less rest of the story and more scenes with Will and Rosario. The film was at its best when the story was focused on them.
Best TV Show: The Office - watching Dwight sell unicorn Barbie dolls is way too funny.
Best TV Character (Male): Zachary Levi in Chuck
Best TV Character (Female): Mary McCormack in In Plain Sight
Best Soundtracks:
1. "This is Home" by Switchfoot (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian)
2. "The Call" by Regina Spektor (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian)
3. "A Night to Remember" by HSM cast (High School Musical 3)
Best Album: She & Him - Volume One
Best Solo Artist: Leona Lewis
Best Music Video: "Drive My Soul" by Lights
Best Podcast: Mixed Chicks Chat
Best Video Blog: EpicFu.com
Best Trend: Keffiyeh scarves
Best Book: Only Uni by Camy Tang
